Recovery Acres has exciting news. Not only have we begun renovations to turn a transitional house into a women’s treatment center, we have some very special people helping us make it happen. Producer/Director Candace Schmidt and Director of Photography Luis Gonzalez of L&C Style are an award-winning film production team with a big heart for community.
This fall Candace and Luis will launch a reality television pilot series called Crowns of Construction. The show makes renovations projects extremely entertaining with celebrity hosts and guests, not to mention an extra awesome twist – the first project will be Recovery Acres women’s facility.
“This production is very close to our hearts,” says Candace of herself and Luis. “For us it can’t be just about making entertainment. We want our work to make a lasting difference in our community.” Candace and Luis have a joint career that spans two decades and 29 countries. They are the creative team behind award-winning documentaries, features, television series, music videos, and commercials. About doing this project, Luis says, “When we heard that Recovery Acres needed help renovating a space where women can begin recovering from addiction, a place where women can even bring their children – we knew it was a place we wanted to invest some creative energy.”
Crowns of Construction is hosted by TJ Anderson (Mrs. Calgary 2013) and Angie Shilliday (Mrs. Canada International, 2014) who have a ton of experience between them when it comes to picking up a sledgehammer. “It’s funny. People don’t realize how long we have been doing this kind of work,” says Angie. “We sometimes get challenged by skeptics but we’re ok with letting our results speak for us.”
TJ agrees. “That just means people care about the quality of the project. And we do too! We are absolutely committed to making it an amazing space for recovery because we know this project is going to help many, many women change their lives for the better.” Also part of the construction team and cast are 1835 House Alumni Clay Hughes and Wes Martens of Serenity Construction Ltd. In the following video (password: cofc), Angie, TJ, Wes and Clay talk about why this project holds a special meaning.
“We couldn’t be more grateful that Crowns of Construction has recognized the great need in our community for more treatment options for women,” says Recovery Acres Executive Director, Gerry Melsted. “With their help, Recovery Acres is able to launch our women’s out-patient program sooner than anticipated and complete with a child minding service.”
Crowns of Construction will include an A-list of celebrities who donated their time and talents to support our women’s program.
